چکیده

Abstract. Ad hoc and multi-hop networks will probably be part of the fourth generation of wireless networks, which will integrate networks of several size and capacities with heterogeneous coverage: cellular networks (3G), WLAN hot spots, Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) and Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN). In this context, MAC protocols play a deciding role for a high utilization of the wireless channel. In this paper, several issues of the MAC layer and concepts for the de nition of a new MAC protocol are presented. These concepts include synchronization, multi-user diversity, and multi-packet reception. It is shown that all these techniques can drastically increase the capacity of the MAC layer for multi-hop networks.

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

Multi-channel Medium Access Control Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

Extensive researches on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been performed and many techniques have been developed for the data link (MAC) layer. Most of them assume single-channel MAC protocols. In the usual dense deployment of the sensor networks, single-channel MAC protocols may be deficient because of radio collisions and limited bandwidth. Hence, using multiple channels can significantly ...

An Opportunistic Pervasive Networking Paradigm: Multi-hop Cognitive Radio Networks

Cognitive radio networks enable ubiquitous communications both in frequency and time domain, and hence enable opportunistic pervasive communications. Multi-hop cognitive radio networks are appealing to the researchers due to their wide range of application potential in commercial, emergency communication, and military tactical networks. However, the multi-hop nature of the network coupled with ...

Improving Fairness and Throughput in Multi-Hop Wireless Networks

In this paper we study the impact of the medium access control (MAC) layer and the routing layer on the performance of a multi-hop wireless network. At the medium access control layer, we argue that the notion of per-node fairness employed by the IEEE 802.11 standard is not suitable for a multi-hop wireless network where flows traverse multiple hops. We propose a new MAC protocol that supports ...
